Colourwork: Theory, Technique & Design - 2.5 Hour Live Class - Sunday 11th January 2026

A 2.5-hour group class with Florence Spurling taught virtually via Zoom taking place on Sunday 11th January 3.00-5.30pm UK time.

Colour is often the first feature we notice in a design and although it is subjective, there are approaches to employ that lead to universally aesthetically pleasing outcomes. To begin, we will discuss colour in the context of knitwear - simple colour theory, choosing colours for different projects, and how fibres and yarns play a part in the decision. Next, we will explore three methods of colourwork techniques within hand knitting, all of which allow for a huge amount of creative exploration. The instruction will introduce each category - Fair Isle/Stranded Knitting (2 and 3 colours), Intarsia Knitting and Slip Stitch/Mosaic Knitting – showing knitted examples and explaining the fabric structure and how it is created. Please note the intarsia method will be worked flat and the Fair Isle/Stranded Knitting and Slip Stitch/Mosaic methods will be worked in the round. Each will be demonstrated and students will work from a simple chart to put this knowledge into practice. Knitters will also get an insight on how to design their own patterns within each colourwork category - ideas and advice on the design process will be given so that you can come up with your own unique creations.

Students will receive an informative handout and a free pattern of mine is included in the class price. The class will be recorded for your reference afterwards (or if you cannot make the live class) and will be available to watch for 6 months after the live date.

Materials

  • A minimum of two contrasting coloured yarns in the same weight (fingering/sport/DK). Have additional yarns on hand if you want to explore - you will need a third colour to explore 3-colour Fair Isle/Stranded Colourwork.
  • Circular or straight needles suited to your yarn weight, to practice Intarsia worked flat.
  • Double pointed needles or small circular needles suited to your yarn weight, to practice Fair Isle/Stranded Knitting and Slip Stitch/Mosaic Knitting in the round. If you choose to use small circular needles, please cast on before class: Cast on a multiple of 12 stitches in one colour.

No homework (except casting on if you choose to use small circular needles - see above), but there will be a handout.

  • Class Level: No experience in any of the colourwork methods is needed.
  • Teacher: Florence Spurling.
  • 2.5 hours class tuition, with access to the class recording, and a free pattern download of your choice (from my self published pattern collection)
